Excursion to the State Organization «Gagarin Research&Test Cosmonaut Training Center»: Space Technologies as a Tool for Advancing Partnerships with Latin American Countries

On April 28, 2026, the Russian House of International Scientific and Technical Cooperation (RH ISTC), with the participation of the National Committee for Economic Cooperation with Latin American Countries (NC CEPLA) and with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and the State Corporation for Space Activities «Roscosmos», organized a one-day off-site visit to the Yuri A. Gagarin Research & Test Cosmonaut Training Center for ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions from Latin American countries. The event was held as part of Space Week, commemorating the 65th anniversary of the first human spaceflight.

A total of 26 representatives from 13 Latin American embassies took part in the visit, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Guatemala, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Peru, El Salvador, and Chile. The officials were accompanied by members of their families.

The delegations of Argentina, Brazil, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, and El Salvador were headed by the respective ambassadors.

Welcoming remarks to the foreign delegation were delivered by R.A. Buinyi, Assistant Head for Revenue-Generating and International Activities, Interregional Cooperation and Public Relations at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, and by D.A. Protasovsky, Director General of the Russian House of International Scientific and Technical Cooperation.
During the visit, participants toured the Soyuz MS crewed spacecraft simulators, a mock-up of the «Mir» orbital station, the Russian segment simulator of the International Space Station (ISS), as well as the centrifuge and the hydrolaboratory. In the hydrolaboratory, the guests were given a unique opportunity to observe a training session of cosmonauts Dmitry Petelin and Konstantin Borisov. The training involved maneuvering along the cargo boom beam located on the external surface of the ISS Russian segment mock-up, transferring a sealed container with a replaceable panel into the working area of the station’s Functional Cargo Block.

The diplomatic, cultural, and business-oriented visit to the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center provided representatives of Ibero-American embassies in the Russian Federation with an overview of Russia’s achievements as a technological leader in space, with a view to fostering both bilateral and multilateral cooperation in space exploration and research.
